Remix video

For your third mini-project, you will work with a partner to develop a remix video idea. I’m asking you to collaborate because this mini-project requires a lot of fiddly technical stuff, for which having a buddy will be very helpful. Two pairs of eyes also makes it easier to create a remix that will make sense to the outside world!

By the end of the day on October 28, tweet:

  • Who you will be working with
  • What your video’s focus (the fandom or theme) will be
  • How your video idea fits with the focus of our class

In class on November 4, you’ll get as far as you can with the process of making your video. Before class, you will need:

  • Your focus. What’s the point you want to make? Which characters/ideas/elements does it focus on? Who is your audience?
  • Audio footage. If you’re making a music video, this will be a song (maybe one you’ll need to cut down); you might also use spoken dialogue from your source or something else. Or perhaps you’ll record something.
  • Video footage. On either an external drive or your laptop, bring video files that you can work with in class. You may also include still images.

We’ll go over the process for acquiring source, including best practices for fair use remix, in class on October 28. The best balance of quality and file size comes from DVDs, so think about using a source where you can access those – though for our purposes here, quality may not be the top priority.

Your grade for this project won’t be based on what you create but rather on your reflection on the process, which is due Monday November 9 at midnight. Your reflection will be a blog entry, in which you should cover the following ground:

  • Explain your remix project, including images and links to related media.
  • Briefly explain what progress you made during class and what steps would come next if you were planning to finish your remix.
  • Share your work – either in the form of a short video clip (you can use Sendvid to create a private video that only people with the exact link can see: http://sendvid.com/ ) or by uploading screenshots of your work in progress.
  • Reflect on how, if at all, the process of developing and researching your remix idea has shifted your relationship to the source material you used.
  • Using at least two readings from class, describe how your remix project adds to our discussions of race, gender, and/or related questions of power and privilege in digital media.

Write at least 800 words.
